Iron-on patch

Ritz Theatre and Museum

$8.00

The Ritz Theatre and Museum is an African American-oriented performing arts venue and museum in the LaVilla neighborhood of downtown Jacksonville, Florida. The Art Deco theatre was designed by local architect Jefferson Powell and built in 1929, and its 426-seat hall now hosts music, dance, theatre and film. Just off the lobby, the LaVilla Museum holds about 11,000 square feet of exhibits. From 1921 to 1971 LaVilla was known as the "Harlem of the South." After decades of decline, the city rebuilt the theatre and museum under Mayor Ed Austin's River City Renaissance plan and reopened them in 1999; the sign and northwest corner are all that remain of the original building.
