The Renaissance Center, or RenCen, is a complex of seven connected towers on the Detroit riverfront, built in the 1970s as a "city within a city" to anchor the redevelopment of a declining downtown. It was developed by a consortium led by Henry Ford II's Ford Motor Company and designed by John Portman; its five tallest towers opened in 1976 and 1977, led by a 73-story cylindrical hotel tower that was then the world's tallest hotel and is still the tallest building in Michigan, and two shorter towers followed in 1981. General Motors bought the complex in 1996 for its world headquarters and added the glass Wintergarden atrium facing the river in 2001. GM moved its headquarters to Hudson's Detroit in January 2026 and closed the public spaces, so access inside is now limited to office tenants, hotel and restaurant guests, and authorized visitors. A redevelopment plan with Bedrock calls for demolishing towers 300 and 400 and most of the podium, with work planned to begin in April 2027.
