Reelfoot Lake State Park, near Tiptonville, Tennessee, surrounds a lake formed when the New Madrid earthquakes of 1811 and 1812, among the most powerful ever recorded in the eastern United States, caused sections of land to sink and the Mississippi River to flood into the depression. Cypress trees now stand rooted in the shallow, swampy lake that resulted. The lake is a major wintering ground for bald eagles, drawing guided eagle-watching tours each winter. It is also popular among anglers for crappie fishing.
