Red Rock Canyon Open Space

$8.00

Red Rock Canyon Open Space is a 789-acre city park on the west edge of Colorado Springs, next to Manitou Springs and just south of Garden of the Gods across U.S. 24. Its eroded canyons and low parallel ridges, called hogbacks, are made of the same Fountain and Lyons sandstones as the Garden's red rocks. Before it was a park the land served as a quarry, gravel pit, gold refining mill and landfill: the Kenmuir Quarry cut Lyons sandstone here in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and the Gypsum Canyon landfill ran from 1970 to 1986 and is still closed to visitors. John George Bock bought up the parcels in the 1920s and 1930s, and the City of Colorado Springs purchased the property in 2003 and opened it for recreation. Its trails are popular with hikers, runners and mountain bikers and connect to the Intemann Trail to Manitou Springs and the Section 16 area to the south.
