Iron-on patch

Red Mountain Park

$8.00

Red Mountain Park is a 1,500-acre public park along a 4.5-mile stretch of Red Mountain, the iron-ore ridge that runs through Birmingham, and one of the largest urban parks in the United States. The land was owned by U.S. Steel and mined for ore, and closed mine openings and other remains of the mining operations still line its trails. The Freshwater Land Trust began raising money to buy the site in 2005, the state created a commission to own and run it in 2006, and the park opened to the public in 2012. It now has more than 18 miles of hiking and biking trails, treehouse overlooks such as Haskell Hideaway and Rushing Rendezvous, and Remy's Dog Park, a six-acre off-leash area. There is no parking or admission fee.
