Rancho Los Cerritos

$8.00

Rancho Los Cerritos is the adobe ranch house that merchant Jonathan Temple built in 1844 as the headquarters of a 27,000-acre cattle rancho, now a historic site and museum in the Los Cerritos neighborhood of Long Beach. The Monterey Colonial adobe has been called the largest and most impressive adobe residence built in Southern California during the Mexican period. Flint, Bixby & Company bought the rancho in 1866 and turned it over to sheep, and Jotham Bixby, known as the father of Long Beach, raised his seven children in the house. The Bixby family sold it to the City of Long Beach in 1955, the city opened it as a museum of California's rancho period, and it was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1970. Visitors see rooms furnished as they were in the 1870s, a visitor center with exhibits, and gardens with olive, pomegranate and cypress trees planted by Temple.
