Proctor's Ledge Memorial

$8.00

Proctor's Ledge Memorial marks the spot at the base of Gallows Hill where the 19 people convicted of witchcraft in 1692 were hanged. For centuries the executions were assumed to have happened on the hilltop, until the University of Virginia's Gallows Hill Project, working with the City of Salem, used old maps and records, GIS and ground-penetrating radar to confirm this small ledge as the site in January 2016. The city, which owns the land, dedicated the memorial in 2017. A curved granite wall carries the names of the 19 victims around a locust tree, with the words "We Remember" set into the ground. It sits in a residential neighborhood about a mile from downtown and has no parking of its own, so visitors park at nearby Gallows Hill Park and walk over.
