Presque Isle State Park, in Erie, Pennsylvania, occupies a sandy peninsula extending into Lake Erie, its name French for 'almost an island,' reflecting how littoral currents have periodically reshaped and reconnected the landform over time. Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry built and based his fleet in Presque Isle Bay before sailing out to fight the Battle of Lake Erie in 1813, and the park includes historic lighthouses marking that maritime history. Its beaches, lagoons, and woodlands make it a major stopover for migratory birds and a popular birding destination. The park offers multiple swimming beaches along both the bay and lake sides of the peninsula.
