Iron-on patch

Preservation Park

$8.00

Preservation Park is a one-block cluster of sixteen Victorian-era buildings in downtown Oakland, bordered by 12th Street, Castro Street, 14th Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Way. Five of them stand where they were built; the other eleven were moved here from elsewhere in Oakland to save them from demolition. Grouped around the cast-iron Latham-Ducel Fountain and a bandstand, the houses recreate a late 19th-century Oakland neighborhood in Italianate, Queen Anne, Stick, Shingle, Colonial Revival and Arts and Crafts styles. The grounds are open to the public during the day, but the buildings are offices for nonprofits and event spaces rather than house museums. Look for the James White House, home of Seventh-day Adventist leaders Ellen and James White, and the Remillard House, where Lilly Remillard tutored a young Jack London.
