Portland Japanese Garden

$8.00

Portland Japanese Garden is a 12.5-acre Japanese garden in Washington Park, next to the International Rose Test Garden, run by a nonprofit that was founded in 1963 as the Japanese Garden Society of Oregon. Professor Takuma Tono of Tokyo Agricultural University began his design work in 1963 on the site of the old Portland Zoo, and after about four years of construction the garden opened to the public in 1967. It has five garden spaces in different styles of Japanese landscape architecture, among them the Strolling Pond Garden, the Flat Garden, the Sand and Stone Garden and the Tea Garden with its Kashintei tea house, plus a Cultural Village added when the grounds grew from 5.5 to 12.5 acres in 2017. More than 400,000 people visit each year, and it has been called the most beautiful and authentic Japanese garden outside Japan.
