Popham Beach State Park

Popham Beach State Park sits at the mouth of the Kennebec River in Phippsburg, Maine, where the river meets the Gulf of Maine. At low tide, visitors can walk out to Fox Island, a small island otherwise cut off by water, across shifting sandbars that change from season to season. The park sits near the site of the short-lived Popham Colony, an English settlement established in 1607, the same year as Jamestown, but abandoned after about a year. The nearby Fort Popham, a Civil War-era coastal fortification, guards the river mouth just outside the park.
