The Pittock Mansion is a French Renaissance-style chateau in the West Hills of Portland, built between 1909 and 1914 as the home of London-born Oregonian publisher Henry Pittock and his wife, Georgiana Burton Pittock. Designed by San Francisco architect Edward T. Foulkes and built of Tenino sandstone, the 16,000-square-foot house has 23 furnished rooms and a grand circular marble staircase, according to the Pittock Mansion Society. It was fitted with conveniences that were new at the time, including a central vacuum system, intercoms, indirect lighting, an elevator and a walk-in refrigerator. The estate of about 46 acres is owned by Portland Parks & Recreation and run as a house museum open for touring.
