Pilot Mountain State Park

Pilot Mountain State Park, near the town of Pilot Mountain, North Carolina, is centered on the Big Pinnacle, a distinctive rock dome visible for miles across the surrounding countryside. The mountain is part of the Sauratown Mountains, an isolated range separate from the main Blue Ridge chain, and was known to the region's Saura people by a name often translated as 'great guide,' reflecting its use as a landmark. A corridor of protected land extends south from the peak to the Yadkin River, popular for canoeing. The mountain's isolated, knob-like profile makes it one of the most recognizable landmarks in the North Carolina Piedmont.
