Piestewa Peak / Phoenix Mountains Preserve

$8.00

The Phoenix Mountains Preserve protects the desert peaks and foothills of the Phoenix Mountains in north-central Phoenix, and its best-known summit is Piestewa Peak, which at 2,610 feet is the second-highest point in the range after Camelback Mountain. The Piestewa Peak Summit Trail, a National Recreation Trail, climbs 1,208 feet in 1.2 miles and is one of the city's most popular hikes; it stays open until 11 p.m., which makes it a favorite for night hikes. The Dreamy Draw Recreation Area forms the trailhead and northern part of the preserve, and about fifteen miles of interconnecting trails are open to hikers, cyclists and horseback riders from sunrise to sunset. The Phoenix Mountains Park and Recreation Area around Piestewa Peak was the first of these parks to be preserved, and the city acquired most of the preserve in the early 1970s as development pressed toward the mountains. The peak was renamed in 2003 for Army Spc. Lori Ann Piestewa, the first known Native American woman to die in combat in the U.S. military.
