Picacho Peak State Park

Picacho Peak State Park, near the town of Picacho, Arizona, is centered on a distinctive volcanic peak visible from Interstate 10 between Tucson and Phoenix. In April 1862, Union and Confederate forces clashed here in the Battle of Picacho Pass, generally recognized as the westernmost battle of the Civil War. In years with sufficient winter rain, the park's slopes fill with Mexican gold poppies and other wildflowers, drawing large crowds each spring. Trails climb the peak's steep, rocky terrain to views over the surrounding desert.
