Perry Harvey Sr. Park

$8.00

Perry Harvey Sr. Park is a city park at 900 East Scott Street on the east edge of downtown Tampa, laid out along Central Avenue, once the main street of the Scrub, Tampa's first Black neighborhood. From the late 1800s Central Avenue was a thriving Black business and entertainment district and a stop on the Chitlin' Circuit, whose Cotton Club hosted Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington, until public housing clearance and interstate construction razed it between the 1950s and 1970s. The redesigned park opened in March 2016 with James Simon's gateway sculptures of musicians and dancers, a ribbon of timeline pavers, Rufus Seder's Lifetiles history walk and Michael Parker's Leaders' Row. Its north end holds the Bro Bowl, Florida's first public skatepark, which opened in 1979 and was the first skatepark listed on the National Register of Historic Places; it has been rebuilt in a design based on the original. The park also has three basketball courts, an interactive fountain and a festival lawn.
