The Peabody Essex Museum traces its roots to the East India Marine Society, founded in 1799 by Salem sea captains and supercargoes who were required to bring home "natural and artificial curiosities" from beyond the Cape of Good Hope or Cape Horn. The society's collection passed to the Peabody Museum of Salem, which merged with the Essex Institute in 1992 to form the PEM. It is billed as one of the oldest continuously operating museums in the United States. Its holdings run to about 1.3 million pieces and 22 historic buildings, including one of the country's major collections of Asian art and Yin Yu Tang, an 18th-century Chinese house moved from Anhui province and rebuilt on site. After its 2019 expansion, it ranks among the ten largest art museums in North America by gallery space.
