Patterson Park

$8.00

Patterson Park is a 137-acre urban park in Southeast Baltimore, bordered by East Baltimore Street, Eastern Avenue, South Patterson Park Avenue and South Linwood Avenue, and nicknamed the "Best Backyard in Baltimore." It began in 1827, when merchant William Patterson gave the city five acres for a public walk, and the city bought 29 more acres from his family in 1860. Its high northwest corner, Hampstead Hill, anchored the earthen defensive line where more than 10,000 American troops and 100 cannon turned back the British land attack on September 13-14, 1814, during the Battle of Baltimore. The 60-foot Patterson Park Observatory, long known as the Pagoda, was completed in 1892 to a design by Charles H. Latrobe and is still open to visitors. The park also has a boat lake where fishing is allowed, a marble fountain, the Pulaski Monument, a summer swimming pool and a winter ice rink.
