Park of the Canals is a 31-acre City of Mesa park at 1710 N. Horne that preserves remnants of prehistoric Hohokam irrigation canals. The Hohokam dug the Salt River Valley's canal network by hand centuries before any European settlement, and when Mesa's Mormon founders arrived in 1877 and 1878 they dug their own canals and reused some of the original Hohokam lines. The canal site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975, after which the city developed the park and, later, the Brinton Desert Botanical Garden inside it. Today it has shaded garden areas, picnic ramadas, a playground and an unpaved walking path, and it is open from sunrise to 10 p.m. It is a separate site from Sce:dagĭ Mu:val Va'aki (Mesa Grande), the Hohokam platform mound a few miles to the west.
