Papago Park

$8.00

Papago Park is a hilly desert park shared by Phoenix and Tempe, covering 1,200 acres on the Phoenix side and 296 acres in Tempe, and known for red sandstone buttes formed 6 to 15 million years ago. Its best-known formation, Hole-in-the-Rock, has openings eroded through the rock, and there is some evidence that the Hohokam used them to track the solstices. The park holds the Desert Botanical Garden, the Phoenix Zoo, the Arizona Heritage Center, small lakes, hiking and biking trails, and Hunt's Tomb, the white pyramid where Arizona's first governor, George W. P. Hunt, is buried. During World War II it housed a prisoner-of-war camp, and on December 23, 1944, 25 German prisoners escaped through a 178-foot tunnel in the largest mass escape from any U.S. prison camp of the war. It has been designated a Phoenix Point of Pride.
