Palisades State Park

Palisades State Park, near Garretson, South Dakota, protects pink and red cliffs of Sioux quartzite rising along Split Rock Creek, among the oldest exposed rock formations in the region at well over a billion years old. The distinctive stone was historically quarried throughout the area and used in buildings across South Dakota, including the state capitol. Trails along the creek let visitors walk beneath and among the cliffs. The park's dramatic rock scenery stands out sharply from the flat farmland surrounding it.
