Iron-on patch

Oxley Nature Center

$8.00

Oxley Nature Center, formally the Mary K. Oxley Nature Center, is a free city nature preserve of more than 800 acres in the northeast corner of Mohawk Park in Tulsa, entered at 6700 Mohawk Boulevard. About nine miles of mostly flat trails loop through floodplain forest framed by Bird Creek and Coal Creek, an 11-acre prairie and Blackbird Marsh, where a boardwalk crosses the wetland and an observation tower looks out over 60-acre Lake Sherry. It is one of Oklahoma's best-known birding spots, with painted and indigo buntings, warblers and white pelicans in summer, and deer, bobcats, barred owls and armadillos year-round. The center grew from a 1972 citizen proposal to the Tulsa Park Board, and a $200,000 gift from John and Mary Oxley in 1977, followed by a 1979 Mabee Foundation challenge grant, paid for the Oxley-Yetter Interpretive Building and the trails. Pets and bicycles are not allowed on the trails.
