Iron-on patch

Old Town San Diego

$8.00

Old Town San Diego is the city's original town at the foot of Presidio Hill, preserved by Old Town San Diego State Historic Park. Settlers moved down from the Spanish presidio on the hill in the 1820s, after Mexican independence, and the Mexican government made San Diego a pueblo in 1834. The town remained the commercial and governmental heart of the region into the early American period, serving as county seat after California statehood in 1850, until Alonzo Horton's New Town drew business to the waterfront and county records moved there in 1871. The state historic park, established in 1968, preserves and recreates the town as it was from 1821 to 1872, with five original adobes including the 1827 Casa de Estudillo, a schoolhouse, a blacksmith shop and San Diego's first newspaper office. Entry to the park and its museums is free.
