The Old Slave Mart Museum occupies the building at 6 Chalmers Street in Charleston's French Quarter that was built in 1859 as the auction gallery of Ryan's Mart, a private slave market. Enclosed markets like Ryan's opened along Chalmers, State and Queen streets after the city banned public slave auctions in 1856, and sales continued here until about 1863. The building is believed to be the last surviving slave-auction facility in South Carolina, and it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. After decades as a tenement and a car showroom it first became a museum in 1938; the City of Charleston restored it in the late 1990s, and the museum now interprets the history of the city's slave trade.
