Old Sacramento is the riverfront district where Sacramento began, a National Historic Landmark District between the Sacramento River and Interstate 5, from I Street to Capitol Mall. Most of its buildings date from the rebuilding after the great fire of 1852, and raised streets left a hidden underground level that tours still visit. The district was the western end of the Pony Express and the first transcontinental railroad, and about a third of it is now Old Sacramento State Historic Park, with the Railroad Museum and the moored riverboat Delta King. By the 1960s it had fallen into disrepair and was restored as a living-history district. Next door, the West End, a crowded neighborhood of Japanese American and other minority families that included the city's Japantown, was cleared by eminent domain in the 1950s for the Capitol Mall; Southside Park, a few blocks south, tells more of that working-class story.
