Iron-on patch

Northwest African American Museum

$8.00

The Northwest African American Museum (NAAM) is a museum of Black history, art and culture in the Pacific Northwest, located in Seattle's historically African American Central District. It occupies the former Colman School, a Jacobean-style elementary school built in 1909 and designated a City of Seattle landmark in 2009, with the museum on the ground floor and 36 affordable apartments above it. Activists occupied the empty school in 1985 and held it for eight years to claim it for a Black heritage museum, and after years of planning the museum opened in March 2008. Its 17,000 square feet hold galleries for permanent and changing exhibitions, and its first show featured the Seattle artists Jacob Lawrence and James W. Washington Jr. The building stands beside Jimi Hendrix Park.
