Iron-on patch

North End

$8.00

The North End is Boston's oldest residential neighborhood, inhabited since it was colonized in the 1630s and covering about 0.36 square miles between the Rose Kennedy Greenway and Boston Harbor. It holds Freedom Trail landmarks including the Paul Revere House, the Old North Church and Copp's Hill Burying Ground, whose earliest grave markers date to 1661. Irish, Eastern European Jewish and Italian immigrants settled its streets in turn, and by 1930 its 44,000 residents were almost entirely Italian. Hanover Street, which bisects the neighborhood, is lined with Italian bakeries and restaurants, and street feasts such as the Feast of St. Anthony and the Fisherman's Feast still draw large crowds. In 1919 the Great Molasses Flood swept down Commercial Street here, killing 21 people.
