North Cheyenne Cañon Park is a city-owned regional park in the foothills about 4.5 miles southwest of downtown Colorado Springs, covering roughly 1,277 acres of the canyon cut by North Cheyenne Creek. Its best-known stop is Helen Hunt Falls, named for the writer and Native American rights advocate Helen Hunt Jackson, and a short, moderately steep trail above it climbs to Silver Cascade Falls. The park began in 1885, when the city bought 640 acres of the canyon from Colorado College, and General William Jackson Palmer later donated more land. The Starsmore Visitor and Nature Center sits at the entrance, and about 56 miles of trails, a scenic drive and picnic areas run up the canyon to the junction of Gold Camp Road and High Drive. The park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is separate from Seven Falls, which lies in neighboring South Cheyenne Cañon.
