Iron-on patch

Nob Hill

$8.00

Nob Hill is a neighborhood just east of the University of New Mexico, built around a commercial strip on Central Avenue, the former U.S. Route 66. It was developed between about 1925 and 1950, and its shops grew up in the 1930s serving both residents and Route 66 travelers, with businesses like the Lobo Theater (1938) and Albuquerque's first modern shopping center, the 1947 Nob Hill Business Center at Central and Carlisle. The strip declined after Interstate 40 drew traffic off Central and big malls opened in the northeast of the city, then rebounded from the 1980s on the strength of its Route 66-era character. Today it is known for mostly locally owned shops, galleries, bars and restaurants, and has been called the heart of Albuquerque's Route 66 culture and its hippest, funkiest retail and entertainment district. The name comes from developer D.K.B. Sellers, who named a hill in his University Heights addition after San Francisco's Nob Hill.
