Iron-on patch

Nitt Witt Ridge

$8.00

Arthur Beal, a WWI veteran and Cambria's garbage collector known locally as 'Captain Nitt Witt,' spent roughly five decades terracing a steep hillside lot into a multi-story home built almost entirely from what his job supplied: beer cans, abalone shells, tile scraps, and discarded appliances. Beal quarried and shaped the site by hand with a pick and shovel starting in 1928, adding whimsical rooms, walkways, and a rooftop deck as he went. The California Historical Landmark passed through private owners after Beal's 1992 death and is not currently open for interior tours. It remains visible from Hillcrest Drive, the residential street below.
