Natural Tunnel State Park, near Duffield, Virginia, protects a massive limestone passage, roughly 850 feet long and up to ten stories high, carved through a mountain ridge by Stock Creek over millions of years. After visiting in the early 20th century, politician William Jennings Bryan reportedly called it the 'Eighth Wonder of the World.' An active railroad line runs directly through the tunnel, built in the 1890s to take advantage of the natural passage instead of constructing an artificial one. A chairlift carries visitors down from the rim to the tunnel floor for a closer look.
