National Underground Railroad Freedom Center

$8.00

The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center is a museum on the Cincinnati riverfront at 50 East Freedom Way, facing the Ohio River. That river was the border between free Ohio and Kentucky, a slave state, and thousands of enslaved people escaped to freedom by crossing it at Cincinnati, some staying in the city and others continuing north to Canada. The museum opened on August 3, 2004, in a 158,000-square-foot building of travertine and copper designed by Boora Architects with Blackburn Architects. Its central artifact is a two-story log slave pen built in 1830, moved from a farm in Mason County, Kentucky, and rebuilt in the museum's atrium. Exhibits cover slavery, the Underground Railroad, abolitionists such as Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass, and the struggle for freedom today.
