The National Museum of Mexican Art is a museum of Mexican, Latino and Chicano art and culture in Harrison Park, in Chicago's Pilsen neighborhood. Carlos Tortolero and a group of Mexican-American teachers founded it in 1982 as the Mexican Fine Arts Center Museum, and it opened in a Chicago Park District building on March 27, 1987. It took its current name in December 2006 and is the only Latino museum accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. The permanent exhibit Mexicanidad: Our Past is Present traces Mexican history from before the Spanish conquest to the Mexican experience in the United States, and each fall the museum mounts what it calls the nation's largest Día de los Muertos exhibition. Admission is always free.
