National Aviary

$8.00

The National Aviary, at 700 Arch Street in Allegheny Commons Park on Pittsburgh's North Side, is the largest indoor aviary in the United States and the country's only independent indoor nonprofit aviary. It began as the city-built Pittsburgh Aviary-Conservatory in 1952, on the site of the former North Side Conservatory, and a 1967 expansion grew it to 25,000 square feet. When the city stopped funding it in 1991, neighborhood leaders formed Save the Aviary to take it over, and in 1993 Congress gave it honorary national status. More than 500 birds and other animals of over 150 species live there, many of them threatened or endangered, including African penguins at Penguin Point, Andean condors and hyacinth macaws. The Aviary breeds rare birds through Species Survival Plans, and three of the Guam kingfishers released on Palmyra Atoll in 2024 hatched there.
