The Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) in north Phoenix opened in April 2010 and is the largest museum of its kind in the world, with a collection of more than 15,000 instruments and related objects from nearly 200 countries and territories. It was founded by Robert J. Ulrich, former chairman and CEO of Target Corporation, who conceived it with his friend Marc Felix after visiting the Musical Instrument Museum in Brussels. The building covers about 200,000 square feet on two floors of galleries and cost more than $250 million. Each country exhibit pairs instruments with high-resolution video of local musicians, and wireless headphones play the sound automatically as visitors walk up. The museum also has a hands-on Experience Gallery, an Artist Gallery with instruments of performers such as Elvis Presley and John Lennon, and a 299-seat theater for concerts.
