Mt. Tabor Park

$8.00

Mt. Tabor Park is a city park of about 176 acres in Southeast Portland, built on Mount Tabor, an extinct volcanic cinder cone that rises to 636 feet and belongs to the Boring Lava Field. Portland is one of only six U.S. cities with a volcano inside its limits, and near the summit a cut face of the cinder cone is exposed beside the amphitheater and basketball court. Between 1894 and 1911 the city built open reservoirs on the slopes, with ornate gatehouses and ironwork, to hold water piped from the Bull Run watershed, and it began buying land for the park in 1909 on the advice of John Charles Olmsted. Red, Green and Blue loop trails circle the volcano, and the whole park was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. In 2023 it became the first Urban Quiet Park in the United States.
