Iron-on patch

Mountain View Cemetery

$8.00

Mountain View Cemetery is a 226-acre rural cemetery in the Oakland hills, founded in 1863 by a group of East Bay pioneers, with grounds laid out by Frederick Law Olmsted, the designer of New York's Central Park. Olmsted's park-like plan pairs broad avenues and grand monuments with the natural hillside. Many of California's leading figures are buried here, including architects Julia Morgan and Bernard Maybeck, railroad magnate Charles Crocker, chocolatier Domingo Ghirardelli and Oakland mayor Samuel Merritt. The ridge of lavish mausoleums known as Millionaires' Row looks across the bay to the San Francisco skyline. The founding association still runs the cemetery, and docents have led tours since 1970.
