Mount Greylock State Reservation, near Adams, Massachusetts, protects Mount Greylock, the state's highest peak at 3,489 feet. Its summit is topped by the Massachusetts Veterans War Memorial Tower, a stone beacon tower built in 1932 and dedicated to the state's World War I dead. Herman Melville, who could see the mountain from his farm in nearby Pittsfield, said its winter silhouette reminded him of a whale, an image often connected to his writing of 'Moby-Dick.' Henry David Thoreau also climbed and wrote about Greylock, describing a night spent on its summit in one of his early books.
