Iron-on patch

Mission Dolores

$8.00

Mission Dolores, formally Mission San Francisco de Asís, is a Catholic church complex on Dolores Street at 16th Street in San Francisco's Mission District. Franciscan missionaries Francisco Palóu and Pedro Benito Cambón founded the mission on October 9, 1776, and it took its common name from a nearby creek, Arroyo de Nuestra Señora de los Dolores. The adobe chapel, built largely by Ohlone laborers and finished in 1791, is the oldest intact building in San Francisco and came through the 1906 earthquake damaged but standing. Beside it stands the Mission Dolores Basilica, completed in 1918 to replace a brick church destroyed in 1906 and named a minor basilica by Pope Pius XII in 1952. The compound also holds the mission's gardens and its cemetery, the oldest in San Francisco.
