The Milwaukee Public Museum is a natural and human history museum that was chartered in 1882 and opened to the public in 1884. Its current home on West Wells Street dates from the 1960s and is known for walk-through exhibits such as the Streets of Old Milwaukee, which opened in 1965. In 1890 taxidermist Carl Akeley built the world's first complete museum habitat diorama here, a muskrat colony, starting the museum's tradition of immersive displays. The museum is moving: it broke ground in 2024 on a new five-story building at Sixth Street and McKinley Avenue, expected to open in 2027, and has announced it will become the Nature & Culture Museum of Wisconsin, so the Wells Street site is not its permanent home.
