Iron-on patch

Middleton Place

$8.00

Middleton Place is a former plantation on the Ashley River about 15 miles northwest of downtown Charleston, home to several generations of the Middleton family. Henry Middleton, later President of the First Continental Congress, began its terraced gardens in 1741, and they are reputed to be America's oldest landscaped gardens. Union troops burned most of the house in 1865 and the 1886 earthquake toppled what remained, leaving the south flanker standing. Restoration of the gardens began in 1916, and today the National Historic Landmark is run by the non-profit Middleton Place Foundation, with stableyards that interpret the lives of the enslaved people who built and worked the plantation.
