Sce:dagĭ Mu:val Va'aki, known until November 2024 as Mesa Grande Cultural Park, preserves a Hohokam Classic Period platform mound at 1000 N. Date in Mesa, Arizona. The Hohokam built the mound around AD 1100 and occupied the site until about 1400, and it is one of only two Hohokam mounds still standing in metro Phoenix, the other being Pueblo Grande. Its caliche walls rise about 27 feet over an area longer and wider than a football field, and the settlement sat near the headgates of the Hohokam canals that watered some 27,000 acres, centuries before Mormon settlers reached the valley in 1877 and 1878. The new O'odham name means "Blue Fly's place of dwelling." The City of Mesa bought the site in 1988, and since its visitor center opened in 2013 the Arizona Museum of Natural History has run it as a seasonal park, open on weekends from about October through May.
