Meridian Hill Park

$8.00

Meridian Hill Park, also known as Malcolm X Park, is a 12-acre National Park Service park on 16th Street NW, on the hill where Columbia Heights meets Adams Morgan. Built between 1912 and 1936 to an Italianate design by George Burnap and Horace Peaslee, it pairs an open upper lawn with a lower plaza, a reflecting pool and a 13-basin cascading fountain, one of the longest in North America. Craftsman John Joseph Earley cast its walls, benches and balustrades in exposed-aggregate concrete, then a new building material. The hill takes its name from the 1804 marker that set the "White House meridian" directly north of the President's house, and the park was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1994. A drum circle that began after the 1965 assassination of Malcolm X still meets here every week, which is why many residents call it Malcolm X Park.
