Mercer Williams House

Mercer House, now the Mercer Williams House Museum, is an Italianate mansion at 429 Bull Street on Monterey Square in Savannah's Historic District. Construction began in 1860 for General Hugh W. Mercer, great-grandfather of songwriter Johnny Mercer, but the Civil War stopped the work, and the house was completed around 1868 by cotton merchant John Randolph Wilder; no one named Mercer ever lived in it. Restorationist Jim Williams bought the long-vacant house in 1969 and restored it over two years. In 1981 Williams shot and killed Danny Hansford inside, the case retold in John Berendt's 1994 book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil and in Clint Eastwood's 1997 film. Tours are run from the carriage house at the rear of the property.
