The Mattress Factory is a contemporary art museum in the Mexican War Streets of Pittsburgh's Central Northside, and a pioneer of site-specific installation art. Artist Barbara Luderowski bought a derelict Stearns & Foster mattress warehouse at 500 Sampsonia Way in 1975, first using it as a place for artists to live and work, and the museum became a non-profit in 1977. Its first exhibition of installation art opened on May 8, 1982, and it has since become known for its artist residencies, in which artists build their works in the museum's rooms. Its roughly 20 long-term installations include Yayoi Kusama's Infinity Dots Mirrored Room, light works by James Turrell and Greer Lankton's It's All About ME, Not You. The museum has spread into several nearby buildings, including a gallery at 516 Sampsonia Way that opened in 2013, and its lit roof is part of the North Side's evening skyline.
