The park's Big Sable Point Lighthouse, built in 1867 and standing over 100 feet tall, is reached by a walk along the beach and remains an active navigational aid. The Sable River is a popular canoeing route through the park's dune and wetland terrain. Its combination of two very different shorelines, lake and dune, makes it one of Michigan's most varied state parks.
