Little Tokyo is the historic Japanese American district in downtown Los Angeles, the largest of the three official Japantowns in the United States. It grew up along East First Street from the late 1890s, and by 1941 it was home to about 30,000 Japanese Americans before the wartime incarceration emptied it. The surviving row of early commercial buildings on the north side of First Street was listed as the Little Tokyo Historic District in 1986 and declared a National Historic Landmark in 1995. The same block holds the Japanese American National Museum, founded in 1992 in the 1925 Hompa Hongwanji Buddhist Temple building, and the Go For Broke Monument to Japanese American veterans of World War II. The district hosts the Nisei Week festival every August.
