Lexington Market is a public market in Downtown Baltimore that has been trading since 1782, making it one of the longest-running public markets in the United States. It began on land donated by Revolutionary War general John Eager Howard, where farmers and Chesapeake Bay watermen sold ham, butter, eggs, produce and seafood straight from their wagons. A market shed went up in 1871; after it burned in 1949 the city built the East Market building at Paca and Lexington Streets, which was replaced in late 2022 by a new 60,000-square-foot market hall with about 50 merchants and kiosks. Faidley's Seafood, known for its crab cakes, is the market's best-known eatery. The Robert and Rosetta sculpture, unveiled in 2022, remembers the enslaved people who worked at the market and were sold there.
