Leland Stanford Mansion

$8.00

The Leland Stanford Mansion at 800 N Street was built in 1856 and bought in 1861 by Leland Stanford, president of the Central Pacific Railroad, shortly before he was elected governor. Three California governors worked from this house in the 1860s, starting during the Civil War: Stanford, then Frederick Low and Henry Haight used it as their office. In 1871 and 1872 the Stanfords raised the house twelve feet against river flooding and expanded it to a four-story, 19,000-square-foot Second Empire mansion. Jane Stanford gave it to the Catholic Diocese in 1900, and it served as a children's home until 1978. After a $22 million restoration it reopened in 2005 as a state historic park and the state's official reception center, and the governor keeps an office here.
