Lan Su Chinese Garden

$8.00

Lan Su Chinese Garden is a walled classical Chinese garden that fills a full city block, about 40,000 square feet, in the Chinatown area of Portland's Old Town Chinatown neighborhood. It is modeled on the scholar gardens of Suzhou, Portland's sister city since 1988, and was designed by Kuang Zhen and built by 65 artisans from Suzhou, who brought 500 tons of rock from China, including Taihu scholar's rocks. The garden opened on September 14, 2000 as the Portland Classical Chinese Garden and was renamed in 2010: Lan comes from the Chinese name for Portland and Su from Suzhou, so the name also reads as Garden of Awakening Orchids. Covered walkways, bridges and pavilions such as the two-story Tower of Cosmic Reflection surround Lake Zither, which covers a fifth of the garden. More than 400 species of plants grow there, about 90 percent of them native to China.
